The conversion of St. Paul was a big deal for the early church — such a big deal that St. Luke tells the story three times in the Acts of the Apostles. I wonder, though, if that story has given us a distorted idea of how conversion works. For most of us conversion is not a dramatic change in direction but a gradual shift into a new lane. No matter what, conversion follows the pattern of St. Paul’s — recognizing the face of Christ in the people around us. “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting.” As a society we notice differences — men and women, black and white, citizen or immigrant. Conversion happens when we see beyond those differences to recognize everyone is a brother or sister.
