In the Acts of the Apostles St. Luke paints an idealized picture of the first Christian community. Everyone got along, everyone was generous, everyone shared their lives. It might have been tempting to stay in that safe and serene environment. However, external events intervened. After the martyrdom of Stephen, “There broke out a severe persecution of the Church in Jerusalem, and all were scattered.” Instead of staying in their happy place the Christians began to ripple out into the larger world — first to the Samaritans, then the “god-fearers,” and, ultimately, to the nations, the gentiles. No doubt those Christians did not want there to be a persecution but God used it to some good end. That is how God operates in our lives as well. Even things that seem negative, things we wish did not happen, can be used by God for our benefit and for those around us. God can transform Good Friday into Easter Sunday.
