My guess is that the apostles were skeptical when Jesus said to them, “I tell you the truth, it is better for you that I go.” How can your absence be better for us! We face similar questions often. We don’t know whether to believe it when the doctor says, “Eat more vegetables. They are good for you.” We are leery of the advice to exercise more. “No pain, no gain.” Right. Many of us have had to practice “tough love” where we tell a loved one that the best way we can help is by withdrawing all support except that which will restore them to sobriety. The truth is that at times the difficult or the challenging is truly what is best for us.
