Paul stood up at the Areopagus and said: “You Athenians, I see that in every respect you are very religious.’ Go to Athens. If you look up while standing on the Areopagus you see the Acropolis which contains the most beautiful buildings in the world, the height of Greek culture. If you look down you see the Agora where Socrates taught, the Academy of Plato, the Lyceum of Aristotle, the Stoa — the heart and soul of philosophy. Yet when Paul stood there he preached that he had something better than all that. Faith in Jesus was better the Greek culture, better than the triumphs of philosophy. Today we need to re-capture some of his confidence. Christian faith is not simply a nice idea among many but necessary for the salvation of the world. People are starving for the good news of God’s love. It is incumbent upon us to share the message as Paul did.
