The scripture readings assigned for the fifty days of Easter are geared to help us understand what Resurrection life is all about. In this, the third week of Easter, the gospel each day is taken from John 6 — the “Bread of Life” discourse. Jesus said, “I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever.” Instead of giving us life insurance, Jesus gives us eternal life insurance. Receiving the Eucharist is the foretaste and promise of the heavenly banquet that is ours as Easter people. The Real Presence of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament is not a commemoration of what happened back in the day but the living embodiment of the new life that Jesus invites us to share.
