The people of the Bible, like people nowadays, tended to divide the world into us versus them. For the Jewish people “them” was anyone who wasn’t Jewish. The gospel broke down the barriers that separated so that everyone was recognized as a child of God and part of the family. This caused no little tension as ACTS reports. You catch the amazement in their voices that there is no longer the ins and the outs. “God has then granted life-giving repentance to the Gentiles too.” We live at a time when differences and divisions have become barriers to communication and cooperation. This is not of God. We must learn how to disagree while at the same time respecting the value and dignity of every individual.
