When I was in community leadership I would visits the missions. Frequently there was some kind of program at the end of which I would thank all those who made it possible. Inevitably I would forget someone and would feel terrible about it. I didn’t want them to feel unappreciated. However, Jesus reminds us that we don’t do what we do in order to be acknowledged or recognized but simply because we are doing what we believe God wants us to do. “When you have done all you have been commanded, say, ‘We are unprofitable servants; we have done what we were obliged to do.’” Perhaps we strike the proper balance when we do express our gratitude to others but the others don’t require it.
