While I am a fan of science fiction I don’t like the sub-genre of time travel. Time travel seems like cheating. The Bible has its version of time travel when a book written after the event tells the story as if it were a prediction of the future. For example, the Book of Daniel, written three hundred years after the Babylonian empire, “predicts” the rise and fall of subsequent empires. In Luke’s gospel, written about the year 85AD, Jesus “predicts” the destruction of Jerusalem in 70AD. Biblical texts like these have as their purpose not history but ethics — how are we who know that in the future we will all die supposed to live each day in a way that are reflects God’s ongoing presence.
