In the Book of Revelation the Spirit addresses the Church at Ephesus: “I hold this against you: you have lost the love you had at first.” That experience of losing “first love” is common in humanity. The walking on cloud nine newly married couple quickly settle into a comfortable accommodation with one another. The zealous newly ordained priest morphs into a crusty old pastor. We have a deeply moving experience of God on retreat and soon our mind wanders we are back to planning menus during Mass. While we cannot stay on the “high” of “first love,” we can exhibit the same kind of care, attention and devotion to our spouse, our vocation, our prayer that characterized the initial experience of falling in love.
