Comparing the way that the Gospel writers tell the story of Jesus tells us something about how the Church remembered and retold the saving events of his life. Both Matthew and Luke report the Parable of the Talents. Luke’s version adds an interesting incident. The master who gave the talents to his servants had gone to become king and according to this version His fellow citizens, however, despised him and sent a delegation after him to announce, ‘We do not want this man to be our king.’ This reflect an actual historical event the Luke’s community remembered. When King Herod died his son when to Rome to be named king to replace his father. Luke weaves that historical memory into the parable. That serves to remind us that the faith is not something written in stone but a living thing. Current events impacts how we understand the message of Jesus. This process is known as development — not change but development as a child grows into being an adult. Let us be open ourselves to the new thing God is doing in our time.
