Sometimes you gotta wonder in reading the Bible. For example Jesus said: “They will put some of you to death…but not a hair on your head will be destroyed.” Okay, how does that work? Jesus wants us to understand what really harms us. Remember the old expression, sticks and stones will break my bones but names will never hurt me? Jesus stands that saw on its head. Nothing external can harm who we really are. We are only truly threatened by things that cause us to doubt our identity as children of God, as made in God’s image, as precious in God’s sight. The sticks and stones which are out there might part the hair on our head but they can’t destroy our true selves.
