There are certain basics in the spiritual life, elements that must be present for a genuine relationship with God. Gratitude is one of them for when we give thanks we are putting the focus where it should be — off of us and onto God. The story of Jesus curing the ten lepers illustrates this point. As they made their journey to the priests after meeting Jesus they realized they had been cleansed. Nine of them said, “I am cured” and were overjoyed. One of them, the Samaritan, said, “Jesus cured me.” Gratitude is fundamental since everything that we have, everything even life itself, is a gift. We give thanks on this day because God woke us up this morning and started us on our way.
