The books of the Maccabees are not included in the Hebrew Bible. However, the story of the Maccabees is well remembered. Brave men and women, zealous for the law, revolted against those who would destroy their religion. The culmination of this revolutionary movement was the re-taking of the temple and then rededicating it for its sacred purpose. Over time this event became commemorated in the Feast of Hanakkah, this year celebrated December 12 through the 20th. The Feast of the Dedication is mentioned in St. John’s Gospel as well. This old, old story reminds us of the importance of remembering. Even after the temple was destroyed the Feast has been celebrated as a reminder of our need to stay dedicated to the service of God.
