When things seem to be going to hell in a hand basket the Biblical promise of a “new heaven and a new earth” is very attractive. This is not working, let’s try again! On the other hand, we need some stability, some security in a world filled with uncertainty. Thus the promise of Jesus that “Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away” offer a sure rock on which we can stand. This is the dilemma of human existence — we want to leap into a better future but we need a secure platform on which to stand in order to take that leap. The new is not necessarily better unless it reflects the gospel values found in the words of Jesus.
