Luke 21:34-36 is the gospel reading for today, the last day of the liturgical year, and for tomorrow, the First Sunday of Advent, the first day of the new liturgical year. (This is Year C.) The Church obviously wants us to notice these words of Jesus! Do not become drowsy … Be vigilant at all times. Drowsiness in this context suggests that the problem is not so much that we are doing things we should not be doing but rather that we are not doing things we should be doing. We get caught up in going with the flow and don’t put our oar in the water to steer in a certain direction. We must be on the watch, vigilant, for opportunities for consolation, generosity, and forgiveness.
