There is some debate in the scientific community if Freud was correct when he said, “Biology is destiny.” That is certainly not the case with God. With God it is not biology but fidelity that matters. When someone from the crowd blessed Jesus’ mother he used that as a teaching moment. “Rather, blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it.” Mary is not praiseworthy because of the biological fact of giving birth to Jesus but because of her acceptance of the word of God in her life. In the past you could expect that certain groups or nationalities would be Catholic — Irish, Italian, Polish, Mexican, etc. But “biological” faith has waned. You are not Catholic because you inherited it with your genes but because you have chosen to be respond to the grace of God that has been offered to you.
