If you would ask the typical Christian what a life in Christ means I doubt that many would answer: freedom. Yet, that was the vision of St. Paul. For freedom Christ set us free. Our initial reaction is the being a Christian limits our freedom because we can’t do all the good things the bad boys do. What St. Paul means is that, in Christ, the compulsions that ordinarily determine our behavior are overcome. The implications of this are described by St. Ignatius of Loyola. Those who live in Christ can freely accept sickness or health, a long life or a short one, riches or poverty, honor or dishonor. Living for God means that no circumstance limits our freedom to live in happiness.
