The Church starts reading today from St. Paul’s Epistle to the Ephesians. This letter is much less personal (and combative) then the recently concluded Epistle to the Galatians. Paul is giving an expansive vision of how the faith operates in our lives. [God] chose us in [Christ], before the foundation of the world, to be holy and without blemish before him. In other words, from the first moment of creation, long before we were born or even thought of by our parents, God chose us, God was loving us. We don’t need to do anything to obtain God’s love. It is given freely, unasked and unearned. We are “adopted children,” who are loved as the brothers and sisters of God’s beloved Son, Jesus. All we need do is accept God’s love, let God love us, and divine graces will transform our lowliness into glory.
