Dom Helder Camara was one of the towering figures of the post-Vatican II Church. He was a bishop in Brazil who proclaimed a vision of a more just and peaceful world. He envisioned the agents bringing about that vision as the “Abrahamic minorities.” This image flows out of St. Paul who urges on believers, “the faith of Abraham, who is the father of all of us,” Jew and Gentile alike. Dom Helder sees those who trust and believe in God capable of creating a world without war, oppression and violence. From small beginnings a new world can be created. He would quote the Brazilian proverb: “When one is dreaming alone he is only dreaming. When we are dreaming together it is the beginning of reality.”
