“See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my heavenly Father.” These words of Jesus which speak of “their angels” is chosen for today’s feast of the Guardian Angels. The belief that guardian angels serve to protect whichever person God assigns them to goes back to Judaism and developed as Christianity spread. When I was growing up the custom was to say as part of your night prayer: “Angel of God, my guardian dear, to whom God’s love commits me here, ever this day be at my side, to light and guard, to rule and guide” — a good reminder of God’s ongoing presence in our lives.
