Jesus says we need to be “rich in what matters to God.” That brings to mind an image from St. Dorotheus of Gaza. He said that God is at the center of a circle and all of humanity is arrayed around God on the rim of the circle. When we move down the radius to become closer to God we are necessarily moving closer to others who are moving down their radius toward the center. The way, therefore, to become rich in what matters to God is to move closer to other people. Jesus warns us that possessions tend to separate people as each one tries to guard their own stuff. Where do I need today to find those human connections which reflect God’s riches.
