He gave some as Apostles, others as prophets, others as evangelists, others as pastors and teachers, to equip the holy ones for the work of ministry, for building up the Body of Christ, St. Paul used the image of the body to describe the working of the Church — each contributing what their gift to the good of the whole. That makes me wonder if at least part of the problem in the Church today is that our structure seems to presume that a priest is equipped for all the works of ministry. We all know wonderful priests who are terrible preachers. Maybe the real issue is not whether there should be married priests or women priests but a recognition of the giftedness of the faithful.
