There is a personality theory that says that much of our behavior is determined by our particular compulsions. Not that our compulsions are bad — some people feel compelled to be happy, others to be helpful, or peaceful, or loyal, etc. But if it is a compulsion then we are not free to do the will of God in every circumstance. Sometimes we should not be helpful but let others help us, etc. St. Paul in talking about sin sees it as a compulsion as well. “I do not do the good I want, but I do the evil I do not want.” We need Jesus to have genuine freedom to do whatever God wants even if it goes against my personality or preferences.
