“Much will be required of the person entrusted with much, and still more will be demanded of the person entrusted with more.” Those words of Jesus are in inspiration and a challenge. We have been entrusted with much as individuals — loving families, supportive communities, life opportunities, good education. Those blessings are not just meant to make us feel good about ourselves but to be used in service for the kingdom of God. Our nation has been entrusted with much. God expects us not to hog those gifts for ourselves but to use them when, for example, refugees fleeing a desperate situation land on our doorstep. St. James has been entrusted with much. How tempting it is to simply breathe a sigh of relief that the parish survived the archdiocesan reorganization. However, the reason we survived, our hospitable community, lively worship, spirit of service, are not meant for ourselves alone but to be used to bring the good news of Jesus into our neighborhood and beyond.
