There was an award winning novel a few years ago — if twenty-five is “a few” — entitled The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy. That might have been a good title for the parables of Jesus. He noticed the presence of God in small things. “To what shall I compare the Kingdom of God? It is like a mustard seed … It is like yeast.” Instead of looking for God in cosmic forces or in the broad stretch of history Jesus found God in the commonplace, in the ordinary. Maybe that should guide our prayer today. Let’s look around us and see what falling leaves, people wearing masks on the bus, supper with loved ones tell us about the presence of God in our lives.
