We can all relate to the words of St. Paul: “For I do not do the good I want, but I do the evil I do not want.” How often have I slapped my head and said, “Why did I do that.” So the Apostle would probably relate to 12-step spirituality. The first step is acknowledging that our life is out of control, that with sheer will power I cannot “do the good I want.” The second step comes in accepting that there is a “higher power” who can help me. St. Paul recognizes the action and presence of “God through Jesus Christ our Lord” as the power which makes it possible to act rightly. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
