“You are … members of the household of God, built upon the foundation of the Apostles.” For St. Paul, the apostolic foundation is necessary for the Church to be Church. In our creeds we confess that we are an apostolic church. Yet we know so little about the apostles except their names. While the apostles are absolutely necessary, who they were as individuals is not that important. The same is true for us. Every Christian is called to be an apostle. We are the only ones who can bring the good news of Jesus into our homes, our workplaces, our schools, with our family and friends and acquaintances. We are necessary in the plan of God — but we’re not that important, for God gives the growth.
