In our creeds we confess to being an “apostolic church.” You are members of the household of God, built upon the foundation of the Apostles. The apostles were not prizes. During Jesus ministry, they were frequently unable to understand what he was about and did betray, deny and abandon him. But in the end they came to faith in him and bore witness to what they had heard and seen from him. It is because of their witness that we know anything about Jesus since he himself left no legacy except in the hearts of his followers. Being an apostolic church is not simply about the past, about what got us this far. It is also about us in our present tense. It is incumbent on us, just as it was on the twelve, to share the good news that we have heard and seen so that others too will come to know what we know: that God is love, that Jesus is the Way and the Holy Spirit empowers us today.
