You are members of the household of God, built upon the foundation of the Apostles. According to our creeds we are an apostolic faith, that is we are sent. God so loved the world that he sent his only begotten Son (John 3:16). Jesus told his apostles, “As the Father has sent me so I send you” (John 20:21). We in turn are sent to bring good news into a hurting world. Being sent seems contrary to the “you do you and I do me” spirit of our present age. Why not let people be content with who they are? Why preach the gospel to people who are comfortable being “spiritual but not religious?” The short answer is love. God sent Jesus out of love. We preach Jesus out of love. Since we love others we are not happy when it seems they are missing an essential element in life. Popular culture is like eating junk food. It might make you feel good for a while but is not sustaining. Having faith is vitamins and proteins. When you love someone you want them to be happy and alive — which believers have experienced as coming as people of faith.
