St. Paul urges us to stand firm against the tactics of the Devil. To understand the tactics of the devil you only need to look at word itself. Devil has at its roots two Greek words: dia, meaning across (think diameter) and ballein, to throw. You can see the root clearly in the English word “diabolical.” From that etymology you recognize that the tactics of the devil is to throw things across, to block, to divide, to separate. The way to stand firm against the devil, therefore, is to unite, to bring together, to find oneness. Christians, therefore, at this time in our nation’s history must find the common ground that unites us instead of separating from and distancing those we disagree with.
