For the gifts and the call of God are irrevocable. St. Paul reminds us that the Chosen People are still the Chosen People. God does not change the divine mind. That is why even a whiff of anti-Semitism or anti-Jewish sentiment (such as reared its ugly head during the pandemic) is directly counter to the will of God. The Jews have been and are the chosen people of God. I am reminded, though, of a humorous line spoken by Tevye, the milkman, in the play, Fiddler on the Roof. “I know we are Your chosen people. But, once in a while, can’t You choose someone else?” Being chosen carries with it responsibility — which is also true for Christians since at Baptism God chose us too.
