The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ. Maybe we’ve heard the message that we are “children of God” so often we’ve lost the revolution in thinking captured in that idea. Instead of the infinite gap that exists between frail humanity and an omnipotent God we are invited into intimacy, into a familial relationship. God is not above it all, but connected, part of our story. We are not on our own, struggling to find our way but companioned with divine compassion. One side effect of this relationship is that there need be no “sibling rivalry.” God’s gifts and graces are infinite and eternal so there is no need to squabble with our fellow “heirs.” There is enough and more than enough for all so we can share with the other children of God with complete freedom.
