The readings assigned for this date are providentially perfect for the saint of this date, Francis of Assisi. The radical call of Jesus to follow him, leaving family behind and not having a place to lay one’s head, characterized the life of Francis. Also of interest is the connection between the story of Nehemiah and that of Francis. Nehemiah wanted to rebuild the Holy City and the Temple of God. At Damiano Francis heard the voice of Jesus say to him “Rebuild my Church.” Initially Francis thought that meant bricks and mortar. Only later, did he understand that rebuilding the Church is not about buildings but about love and mercy and forgiveness. We must remember that as we heed the call to renew the church.
