In the book Animal Farm the rulers proclaim: “All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.” We live in a society which professes equality but those born into privilege because of race or affluence are “more equal.” How different the vision of St. Paul about Christians. “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free person, there is not male and female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” We as a Church do not always live up to that lofty ideal — racism and patriarch exist in the Church reflecting the culture. But we know what we need to be working toward — a place where all are welcomed in the Christian fellowship and everyone’s gifts are valued.
