“This is the will of God, your holiness.” These words of St. Paul struck me because the idea of being holy is not my normal aspiration. I want to be a good person, to act decently. But holiness seems to be meant for someone else, for those who smell faintly of incense. St. Paul is pretty clear, however, holiness is meant for everyone. That suggests to me that my notion of holiness must be off. I am reminded of another biblical word: “Be Holy as I am Holy.” Holiness is about the relationship of the persons of the Trinity. For us to be holy means, therefore, to live in our own relationship with God — to remember whose we are, to shift the focus onto God.
