You know the old saying, the rich get rich and the poor get poorer. That certainly is true in capitalist society — they call it “income disparity” — but is the same true in the spiritual life? Jesus said, “For to everyone who has, more will be given and he will grow rich; but from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away.” The lesson from the “parable of the talents” suggests that gifts given to us are meant to be invested, used, given away. Think, for example, of the gift of time. When we obsess about “me time” we are tempted to miss the opportunities that we have to invest our time in loving family and friends and helping our neighbors.
