In modern times candles have many different uses. They can still provide illumination, for example when the power goes out. But more often they are used in ceremonies (birthday cakes!), for religious purposes such as vigil lights, to warm a chaffing dish, to provide scented air, and even to set a romantic tone. When Jesus tells us to let our little light shine we should bear in mind that they way we do so will be as diverse as the ways that we use candles. Your prayer today provides the opportunity to ask the Lord how you are to let your light bring the warmth of God’s love into the world: public witness? generous service? daily fidelity? a listening ear? prayerful companionship? a welcoming smile?
