When the Jewish people returned from exile they were disappointed that things we not as rosy as they remembered them. Who is left among you that saw this house in its former glory? And how do you see it now? Does it not seem like nothing in your eyes? The prophet Haggai was concerned that a nostalgia for the “good old days” would blind the people of God to the new thing God was doing. God is still God and God’s plan is unfolding as it should. Today’s Catholics should be wary of a similar romanticization of the past. The “good old days” of full churches and many vocations had their own problems. We must keep alert for the “future glory” of God’s will.
