The prophet Zechariah came through the experience of exile with an even greater confidence in God. Instead of disillusionment at the destruction of the nation and the disappointment during the restoration, the prophet felt the presence of God in an even more profound way. See, I am coming to dwell among you, says the LORD. Many nations shall join themselves to the LORD on that day. Not only was Israel to be restored but now the Chosen People would become a magnet where all people would come and find the Lord. This vision was fulfilled at the coming of Jesus where “all are welcome” at the table. We must have that same confidence to invite others to share with us in God’s loving presence.
