The Bible talks about angels as messengers between God and the world. When Jesus c he envisioned a different kind of messenger — an apostle who will bring the good news into a hurting world. On this day when we remember those angels named in the Bible — Michael, Gabriel, Raphael — the gospel is about the call of an apostle. Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said of him, “Here is a true child of Israel.” That reminds us that in the plan of God we should not look for some divine intervention from outside of normal human interactions. It was an ordinary “child of Israel” Jesus relied on. We should look for “angels” among our own relatives and friends to bring us into God’s presence.
