Zechariah is the last prophet we know of in the Old Testament. Malachi is listed after him in the Bible but since Malachi simply means “my messenger” his work is considered anonymous by scholars. Zechariah wrote at a time when the Jewish people were attempting to reconstruct their lives after the trauma of exile. How interesting that he does not focus solely on their rebuilding their country but in the larger gift the Jewish people have to give to others. God has not abandoned the Chosen People but returned to dwell in their midst. The prophet professes: “Many nations shall join themselves to the LORD on that day, and they shall be his people and he will dwell among you.”
