In Matthew and Mark the call of the four fishermen is pretty simple. Jesus walks up to them, says follow me, they leave their nets and follow him. In St. Luke we have a more realistic portrait of how the call of the first disciples occurred. Peter and companions gradually came to understand what Jesus was asking of them. The highlight is Jesus’ invitation to “go out into the deep.” Trusting in the word of the Lord led to all that followed. That phrase was a favorite of Pope John Paul II. It became a metaphor for a more profound understanding of the faith. Pope Francis has a different favorite: “go out to the highways and byways” inviting us to meet those on the margins.
