During Ordinary Time of the liturgical year the readings provided each day are done as a “continuous reading,” a lectio continuuo. The Church picks a book and then we go through it chapter by chapter. For the next three months the gospel chosen for each day will be taken from the Gospel of St. Luke. Be attentive to the themes the third evangelist develops in his portrait of Jesus. For example, St. Luke provides us not information about Jesus but formation as a disciple of Jesus. The demons are portrayed as having knowledge: “I know who you are–the Holy One of God!” But knowing — knowing even the creed and the catechism — is not enough. Followers of Jesus imitate his mercy, compassion, and love.
