Matthew, Mark and Luke all describe the call of the two sets of brothers, Peter and Andrew, James and John, at the beginning of Jesus’ ministry. Only Luke recounts what that encounter looked like. The evangelist describes a multi-step process of coming to follow Jesus that all disciples share. First, interest — Jesus asks Peter to use his boat and he is intrigued. Second, attention — the words of Jesus capture the fishermen’s imagination. Third, challenge — “put out into the deep,” take a chance on me. Excuses — “we’ve been at it all night.” Taking a chance — “I will lower the nets.” Astonishment at what God can do. Reluctance — “I am a sinner.” Acceptance by Jesus — “You will be fishers of men.” Surrender — leaving all to follow him.
