Dag Hammarskjöld served as the second Secretary-General of the United Nations. After his tragic death in a plane crash his diary was discovered and was eventually published. It revealed a man of not only diplomatic skill but also of great spiritual depth. One entry reads: “For all that has been, Thank you. For all that is to come, Yes!” This sentiment expresses a thought St. Paul could relate to. He wrote, What do you possess that you have not received? For that reason the key to the spiritual life is gratitude. Everything is a gift, even waking up this morning. Out of that gratitude comes the freedom to say “yes” to God. We have faith that the Lord will bless us today and forever.
