We begin reading today from St. Paul’s letter to the Church in Colossae. As was Paul’s custom he begins the letter with a word of appreciation for that particular community, a prayer of thanksgiving that they are living the faith. Of course, as was also Paul’s custom, he will fuss with the Colossians about where they need to grow in the faith. What a smart strategy for us to adopt! A great starting point when we enter into dialogue is gratitude. We should express our appreciation for the other, our awareness of the goodness of the other. With that as the foundation, it is easier to move onto the chiding or the correction that is called for. Appreciate first and the reprimand will be received.
