The call of the first disciples in St. Luke’s gospel is a model of the process that we all go through in following Jesus. Like Peter and companions “fishing all night” we try to find our own happiness and we remain unfulfilled. Hearing the word of Jesus we are attracted to his message of love and mercy. When he asks us to “lower our nets for a catch” we are willing to take a chance on his way. It might mean forgiving a harm, being generous with someone in need, resisting a temptation. We find that the way of Jesus brings happiness. When we try to back away because living his way seems too much, Jesus says “follow me.” He will be our constant companion.
