Have you ever joined a committee or became part of a group that has been meeting for awhile? You can be sure that you are going to have a hard time fitting in if every suggestion is met with: “But we’ve always done it this way.” Jesus experienced something like that. He was working to help people understand the love and mercy of God. But if he stepped outside what was expected he was slapped down. “Why are you doing what is unlawful on the sabbath?” Jesus wanted his followers to understand that what we do is less important than why we do it. Jesus was about “fulfilling” the law not by scrupulous observance but by attention to the God who authored the law.
