The birth of Mary is not described in the Bible; however, by the second century there were accounts being written about it. Apparently, the Church started celebrating the feast in the fifth century after the Council of Ephesus named her “the Mother of God.” What the Bible does report is that Jesus is the Son of David, and hence the “Christ, the anointed one” because Joseph who was of the lineage of David was recognized as his father. Joseph was the husband of Mary. Of her was born Jesus who is called the Christ. That serves as a reminder that everything is a gift — Mary like all of us couldn’t claim any dignity or worth except that which God chose to bestow upon her.
